“The Hidden Theme of Faceless Figures”

I often create works based on what I feel in my daily life and on questions that have been underlying me since I was a child. For example, I often wonder, “This person says that, but what do they really think?”

I think our society in particular is characterized by a tight separation between private opinion(Honne) and public stance(Tatemae).

Especially since the Pandemic, I think I have been thinking about this theme more and more.

I usually draw my works at school. During creation, I sit in a chair with casters, moving agilely and listening to music.

I am not very good at painting while sitting still, so I intentionally try to keep my palette and oil paints away from each other, or I paint multiple pieces at the same time.

When I paint standing up, I move and dance to the music!

“Be an artist in any way of life”

After graduation, I plan to find a job and continue creating in between jobs.

Each of us has our own way of life and values, but the fact remains that I am an “artist”. I think there are things I can depict only because I am working in a completely different field.

Anyway, for now, I just want to do what I can do because it is now. Even if there are “limitations” there, I would like to continue painting while enjoying even that.

“My favorite place”

I like a place called Yanakase Warehouse in Gifu Prefecture and visit it often.

It is an old apartment complex that has been converted into a store that sells handmade goods and second-hand clothing.

I love its low ceilings and cozy atmosphere. I think the mix of old and new has something in common with my own worldview.
